Identifying Value-Added Steps

A Value-Added process step must meet all 3 of the following criteria:

1. Materially alters the unit of work
2. Customer directly benefits from the change
3. Done right the first time

Non-Value Added (NVA) Classes

• Dispensable
• Unwarranted redundancies, queues, transit, etc.
• Eliminate all such steps
• Unavoidable
• Regulatory, legal, accounting, etc.
• Consolidate & automate where feasible
• Enabling
• Supports other steps
• Consolidate & automate where feasible
• Error-intensive
• Potentially value-added once improved
• Use DMAIC or RAP to eliminate defects
