Identifying Value-Added Steps
A Value-Added process step must meet all 3 of the following criteria:
- Materially alters the unit of work
- Customer directly benefits from the change
- Done right the first time
Non-Value Added (NVA) Classes
- Dispensable
- Unwarranted redundancies, queues, transit, etc.
- Eliminate all such steps
- Unavoidable
- Regulatory, legal, accounting, etc.
- Consolidate & automate where feasible
- Enabling
- Supports other steps
- Consolidate & automate where feasible
- Error-intensive
- Potentially value-added once improved
- Use DMAIC or RAP to eliminate defects
